How to Calculate Sovereign Gold Bond Returns
A sovereign gold bond (SGB) pays you two things: a fixed 2.5% annual interest on your issue price, and the change in the gold price when you exit. This SGB calculator adds both, then removes tax on interest (and on capital gains if you sell on the exchange).
Gold value at exit = Grams × Price × (1 + growth %)^Years
Total value = Gold value + Interest after tax − Tax on gain
Example
Buy 10 g at ₹15,000/g = ₹1,50,000. Interest over 8 years = ₹30,000 (before tax). At 8% yearly gold growth the gold is worth about ₹2,77,640 at maturity.Interest payout
Interest is paid every six months on the original investment amount and is taxable as “income from other sources” at your slab rate.Quick mental trick
Over 8 years the 2.5% coupon alone adds about 20% to your cost, before any move in the gold price.- Enter your gramsPick 1, 5, 10, 50 or 100 g, or type your own quantity.
- Add the issue or buy priceUse the tranche issue price, or your market price if you bought on an exchange.
- Choose tenure and growthSGB matures in 8 years, with an exit option from year 5.
- Read your resultCompare invested amount, interest, gold gain and total earnings.

What Is a Sovereign Gold Bond Calculator?

They have an 8-year tenor, with premature redemption allowed after the fifth year on an interest payment date.

Sovereign Gold Bond Calculator FAQs
What is a sovereign gold bond calculator?
It is an online tool that estimates your SGB returns by combining the 2.5% annual interest with the expected change in gold price, and then adjusting for tax. You can use it as a sovereign gold bond calculator online, on mobile or as a simple app in your browser.
How is SGB interest calculated?
Interest is 2.5% per year on the initial investment (issue price), credited every six months. With 10 g bought at ₹15,000 per gram, the yearly interest is ₹3,750 before tax.
Can I still buy sovereign gold bonds in 2026?
No new tranches are being issued; the last issue was in February 2024. You can still buy existing SGBs on the stock exchanges through a demat account, subject to availability and market price.
Is the capital gain on SGB tax-free?
Under current rules, capital gains on redemption at maturity are exempt from tax, and RBI premature redemption after year 5 has also been reported as exempt. Interest is taxable at your slab rate. If you sell on the exchange, gains may be taxed. Rules can change, so check with a tax professional.
Is there a separate SGB calculator for SBI, HDFC, ICICI or Axis Bank?
No. SGB terms are the same everywhere. A bank or broker only changes where the bond is held and how you redeem or sell it, not the interest rate or the formula.
How does the SGB calculator work for Zerodha or Groww holders?
Enter the price per gram you paid on the exchange, your quantity and holding period, then choose “Sell on stock exchange”. The result shows an estimate after tax on gains.
How is the RBI redemption price decided?
It is the simple average of the closing price of 999-purity gold, published by IBJA, for the three business days before the redemption date.
What is the maximum SGB investment limit?
The minimum was 1 gram. The maximum was 4 kg per individual and HUF per financial year, and 20 kg for trusts and similar entities.
Is this calculator free and is my data saved?
Yes, it is completely free. Everything is calculated in your browser and no data is stored.
