How to Use the Age Difference Calculator
This age gap calculator compares two people and tells you exactly how far apart they are in age. It has two modes: By date of birth for the exact gap, and By age when you only know two ages, such as 18 and 22. It works for couples, siblings, parents and children, friends and classmates, and you do not need to work out who is older because the tool does that for you.
- Choose a modePick By date of birth for an exact result in years, months and days, or By age to compare two ages in years.
- Enter the two valuesAdd two dates of birth or two ages. Names are optional, and the order does not matter.
- Press CalculateResults also update as you type, so you can compare different people quickly.
- Read, copy or shareSee the gap, the ratio and the acceptable age gap check, then copy it or send it on WhatsApp.
How to Calculate Age Difference by Date of Birth
To find the exact age difference between two people, or between two dates, subtract the earlier date of birth from the later one. To show it in years, months and days, count the whole calendar months first, convert them to years and months, and then count the days that are left over.
If Date 1 + those months goes past Date 2, take away one month
Years = whole months ÷ 12, Months = the remainder
Days = Date 2 − (Date 1 + whole months)
Here are four worked examples. The results are the same ones this calculator shows.
| Date 1 | Date 2 | Age difference | Total days |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 Aug 1992 | 3 Mar 1996 | 3 years, 6 months, 17 days | 1,296 |
| 10 Oct 1990 | 10 Oct 2000 | 10 years, 0 months, 0 days | 3,653 |
| 31 Jan 2001 | 1 Mar 2001 | 0 years, 1 month, 1 day | 29 |
| 29 Feb 2000 | 1 Mar 2001 | 1 year, 0 months, 1 day | 366 |
The last two rows show how month ends and leap days are handled. When a month is shorter than the starting day, such as 31 January plus one month, the calculator uses the last day of that shorter month. That keeps the result consistent and avoids counting a day twice.
How accurate is it?
The date logic uses calendar-month arithmetic and has been checked against an independent date library on more than 4,000 date pairs, including leap-day cases. The calculator uses dates only, so it does not use time of birth or time zones.
Age Difference in Days, Months and Years
The calculator shows the same gap in several units, so you can pick the one you need. This table uses the first worked example, 15 August 1992 and 3 March 1996.
| Unit | Result | How it is worked out |
|---|---|---|
| Years, months and days | 3 years, 6 months, 17 days | Whole months turned into years, plus the leftover days |
| Age difference in months | 42 | Whole calendar months between the two dates |
| Age difference in weeks | 185 weeks and 1 day | Total days ÷ 7 |
| Age difference in days | 1,296 | Exact number of calendar days between the dates |
| Age difference in years (decimal) | 3.55 | Total days ÷ 365.25 |
| Hours and minutes | 31,104 and 18,66,240 | Total days × 24, and total days × 1,440 |
If you only know two ages, switch to the By age tab. The tool then shows the gap in years and months, so 18 and 22 gives an age difference of 4 years.
Acceptable Age Difference for Marriage and Couples
An age gap calculator gives you the exact number, but it cannot tell you whether a relationship will work. You can use this tool as a couple age difference calculator or an age difference calculator for marriage by entering both dates of birth. A five-year gap feels very different at 20 than at 45, so the calculator also shows each person’s age today and the age ratio. Maturity, life stage, shared goals and communication usually matter far more than the number.
The half-your-age-plus-seven rule
A popular rule of thumb says the youngest age you should date is half your age plus seven. Turned around, the oldest age is (your age − 7) × 2. The acceptable age gap check in the results panel compares your two ages with this rule. It is a social guideline, not a scientific or legal limit, and it does not replace the laws on the age of consent or marriage, which differ from country to country.
| Your age | Youngest by the rule (age ÷ 2 + 7) | Oldest by the rule ((age − 7) × 2) |
|---|---|---|
| 20 | 17 | 26 |
| 22 | 18 | 30 |
| 25 | 19.5 | 36 |
| 30 | 22 | 46 |
| 40 | 27 | 66 |
| 50 | 32 | 86 |
For example, if one person is 22, the rule’s minimum partner age is 18 (22 ÷ 2 + 7), so an 18 and 22 pairing sits exactly on the limit. The check is only shown when both people are 18 or older.
What is an appropriate age difference in a relationship?
There is no single appropriate or acceptable age difference. Some people use the rule above as a quick reference, others look at how long they have known each other, and many families compare the gap on a matrimonial profile. Treat the result as one data point, and check the legal minimum age for marriage and consent where you live. This calculator does not give legal advice. Common Mistakes When Working Out an Age Gap by Hand
- Subtracting years only. 1996 minus 1992 is four years, but the real gap in the first example above is 3 years, 6 months and 17 days.
- Treating every month as 30 days. Months have 28 to 31 days, which changes the day count.
- Forgetting leap years. A leap day adds one day to the total, and 29 February birthdays need special care.
- Mixing up the date format. 03/04/1995 is 3 April in India and the UK, but 4 March in the US. The date picker avoids this mix-up.
- Mixing up who is older. Swapping the two inputs still gives the same gap here, because the calculator orders them for you.
Age Difference in Excel: Formulas You Can Copy
Prefer a spreadsheet? Put the earlier date of birth in cell A2 and the later one in cell B2, then use these formulas in Excel or Google Sheets.
Years (decimal): =YEARFRAC(A2,B2)
Whole years: =DATEDIF(A2,B2,”y”)
Months left over: =DATEDIF(A2,B2,”ym”)
Days left over: =DATEDIF(A2,B2,”md”)
All in one: =DATEDIF(A2,B2,”y”)&” years, “&DATEDIF(A2,B2,”ym”)&” months, “&DATEDIF(A2,B2,”md”)&” days”
Microsoft notes that the “md” option of DATEDIF can give inaccurate results in some cases, especially around month ends. If you want a quick, reliable answer, use the calculator above instead.
Age Difference Calculator FAQs
How do I calculate the age difference between two people?
Enter both dates of birth in the calculator and press Calculate. It subtracts the earlier date from the later one and shows the gap in years, months and days, plus the total in months, weeks, days, hours and minutes.
How do I find the age difference by birthday and age?
Use the By date of birth tab and enter each person’s birthday for the exact gap in years, months and days. If you only know ages, switch to the By age tab, enter the two ages in years (decimals such as 25.5 work too) and press Calculate.
What is the age difference between 18 and 22?
The age difference between 18 and 22 is 4 years. Under the half-your-age-plus-seven rule, the minimum partner age for a 22-year-old is 18, so this pairing sits exactly on the limit. The rule is only a social rule of thumb.
What is the half-your-age-plus-seven rule?
It is a rule of thumb that says the youngest age you should date is half your age plus seven. For example, a 40-year-old would date no one younger than 27. It is a social guideline with no scientific or legal basis, and this calculator only applies it to adults.
What is an acceptable age difference in a relationship?
There is no fixed answer. Many couples with a large gap are happy, and many with a small gap are not. Maturity, shared goals, life stage and respect for each other matter more than the number. Both people must also be adults under the law.
Can I use this as a couple or marriage age difference calculator?
Yes. Enter the date of birth of each partner to see the exact gap, each person’s age today and the acceptable age gap check. The result is for information only and is not legal or relationship advice.
Can I use this age gap calculator for siblings, parents or friends?
Yes. It works for any two people, whether they are a couple, siblings, twins, a parent and child, friends or classmates.
How do I calculate age difference in Excel?
Put the earlier date of birth in A2 and the later one in B2. Use =B2-A2 for days, =YEARFRAC(A2,B2) for decimal years, or the DATEDIF function with the y, ym and md options for years, months and days. The full formulas are in the Excel section above.
How does the calculator handle 29 February?
For the age gap, a day that does not exist in a shorter month is moved to the last day of that month. For birthday countdowns, a 29 February birthday is treated as 1 March in years that are not leap years.
Does time of birth change the result?
No. The calculator uses dates only, so people born on the same date show a gap of zero. Total hours and minutes are calendar days multiplied by 24 and 1,440.
Why is my result different from the age calculator?
The Age Calculator measures one person from their date of birth to today. This tool measures the gap between two people, so the two results answer different questions.
Is my data saved?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser, and the dates, ages and names you enter are not stored or sent anywhere. The WhatsApp button only shares the result text when you tap it.
Which dates does it support?
Dates of birth from 1 January 1900 up to today. Future dates are not accepted. In the By age tab, ages from 0 to 120 are supported.
