How it works

PF Calculator Formula: Employee and Employer Contribution

The PF calculation formula is simple. Provident Fund (PF) is calculated on your basic salary plus dearness allowance (DA). You pay 12% and your employer pays another 12%. Your whole 12% goes into your EPF account. The employer’s 12% is split: 8.33% goes to the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS) and the rest goes to your EPF account.

Employee PF = 12% × (Basic + DA)
Employer EPS = 8.33% × (Basic + DA, max ₹25,000)  |  Employer EPF = 12% × (Basic + DA) − EPS
Monthly exampleBasic ₹30,000: employee ₹3,600, employer ₹3,600 (EPS ₹2,083 + EPF ₹1,517). Total to EPF account ₹5,117.
EPS capEPS is paid only on wages up to the ceiling. At ₹25,000 the maximum EPS is about ₹2,083 a month.
InterestInterest = running monthly balance × rate ÷ 12, added to the account at year end.

Interest

EPF Interest Calculator: How PF Interest Is Calculated

EPFO works out PF interest on your running balance every month at one-twelfth of the yearly rate and adds the total to your account at the end of the financial year. The PF interest tab works as a PF interest calculator for this: enter your opening balance, the monthly amount going into EPF and the rate. Example: an opening balance of ₹1,00,000 with ₹3,600 added every month at 8.25% earns about ₹10,180 interest for the year, giving a closing balance of about ₹1,53,380. To test other cases, change the rate to 8.10% or 8.50%, or switch to the PF at retirement tab to see how interest compounds over many years.

Retirement

PF Calculator at Retirement: How Big Can Your PF Balance Get?

Example: a 25-year-old with a basic salary of ₹30,000, a 5% yearly raise, an 8.25% interest rate and retirement at 58 could build a PF balance of about ₹2.01 crore, of which roughly ₹1.40 crore is interest. The longer you stay invested, the more interest does the heavy lifting.

To see your own number, open the PF at retirement tab and enter your current PF balance, basic salary, yearly salary growth and retirement age. Existing balance counts too, so this works as a PF calculator with current balance, or a PF calculator with existing balance if you already have savings in your account. The projection holds the EPS ceiling constant, so a long forecast can be slightly optimistic if the ceiling rises again. Looking to diversify beyond PF? Try the Sovereign Gold Bond Calculator.

Tips to grow your PF balance

  • Do not withdraw PF when you change jobs. Transfer it using your UAN so the balance keeps compounding.
  • Check that your employer calculates PF on your full basic + DA if you want the maximum contribution.
  • Verify your passbook and KYC (Aadhaar, PAN, bank) on the EPFO member portal at least once a year.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate PF from salary?

Use the Monthly PF tab as a PF calculator from salary. Employee PF is 12% of your basic salary plus DA. The employer also pays 12%, of which 8.33% (on wages up to ₹25,000) goes to EPS and the rest to your EPF account. On a basic of ₹30,000 you pay ₹3,600 and the employer’s EPF share is ₹1,517, so ₹5,117 goes into your EPF account every month.

Is there a free PF calculator online without sign-up?

Yes. This PF calculator online is free, needs no registration and runs in your browser, so nothing you enter is stored. Use the Monthly PF tab for salary-based PF, the PF at retirement tab for your future balance and the PF interest tab for yearly interest.

What is the PF calculation formula?

Employee PF = 12% × (Basic + DA). Employer EPS = 8.33% × (Basic + DA, up to the wage ceiling). Employer EPF = 12% × (Basic + DA) − EPS. Interest = monthly running balance × annual rate ÷ 12, credited at year end.

What is the current PF interest rate?

The EPF interest rate for FY 2025-26 is 8.25% a year, unchanged from the previous two years. EPFO’s Central Board of Trustees recommends the rate each year and the government approves it, so check the EPFO website for the latest declaration.

What is the PF wage ceiling in 2026?

The statutory wage ceiling for mandatory EPFO coverage was raised from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 a month with effect from 17 September 2026. It was ₹15,000 from 2014. The EPS share of the employer contribution is calculated only on wages up to this ceiling.

What is PF on a ₹12,000 salary?

On a basic of ₹12,000 the employee PF is ₹1,440 a month. The employer also pays ₹1,440, split into EPS ₹1,000 and EPF ₹440. The total credited to the EPF account is ₹1,880 a month.

What is PF on a ₹14,000 salary?

On a basic of ₹14,000 the employee PF is ₹1,680 a month. The employer pays ₹1,680, split into EPS ₹1,166 and EPF ₹514. The total credited to the EPF account is ₹2,194 a month.

How do I use this as a PF calculator with current balance?

Open the PF at retirement tab, enter your existing PF balance, current basic salary, expected yearly growth, interest rate and retirement age. The calculator adds your future contributions to the existing balance and shows the year-by-year schedule.

How is PF interest calculated?

EPFO works out interest on the monthly running balance at one-twelfth of the annual rate and credits the total at the end of the financial year. Use the PF interest tab to estimate it for any balance and monthly contribution.

Is the employer’s 12% fully added to my EPF account?

No. 8.33% of the employer’s share (on wages up to the ceiling) goes to the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS), which pays a pension later. The remaining part goes to your EPF account.

Is PF interest taxable?

EPF interest is tax-free up to the limit on yearly employee contributions. Interest on employee contributions above ₹2.5 lakh in a financial year (₹5 lakh if the employer does not contribute) is taxable. Withdrawal is tax-free after 5 years of continuous service. Check current rules with a tax professional.

Is there an SBI PF calculator or an EPFO PF calculator?

EPF is run by EPFO, not by banks, so there is no separate SBI EPF scheme. SBI offers PPF accounts, which is a different savings scheme. This calculator covers EPF and works the way the EPFO member passbook does, but your passbook remains the official record.

Can I use this as an ESI PF calculator?

No. This tool calculates PF only. ESI is a separate scheme for employees under a wage limit, with usual rates of 0.75% from the employee and 3.25% from the employer. It is not part of PF. Confirm the current limit on the ESIC website.

How do I use this as a monthly PF calculator?

Open the Monthly PF tab, enter your monthly basic salary plus DA and pick your wage ceiling. You instantly see the employee PF, the employer’s EPS and EPF shares and the total credited to your EPF account every month.

Is this an online PF calculator for India?

Yes. This is a free PF calculator India employees can use online. It follows EPFO rules, the ₹25,000 wage ceiling and the 8.25% interest rate. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing you enter is stored.

Is a PF calculator the same as an EPF calculator?

Yes. PF and EPF both mean the Employees’ Provident Fund run by EPFO, so this one tool works as a PF calculator and an EPF calculator.

Is there a PF interest rate calculator?

Yes. Use the PF interest tab, enter your balance and monthly contribution and change the rate to test different cases, such as 8.10% or 8.50%. The default is the current 8.25%.

Does every employee get EPS?

No. EPS membership for new entrants is generally available only if wages at joining are up to the ceiling. Employees above it are usually EPF-only, so the employer’s full 12% goes to EPF. Use the EPS membership option in the calculator and confirm with your employer or EPFO.

Is this PF calculator accurate?

It gives a close estimate using the standard 12% and 8.33% rules, the ₹25,000 ceiling you select and the interest rate you enter. Employers can round differently or use a different PF wage, so check your payslip and EPFO passbook for official numbers.
